From a young age, I found mathematics and physics fascinating, as they explain everyday phenomena like why the sky is blue and how magnets attract metals. Despite my interest, I admit I was a lazy student, which pushed me to find interesting and effective ways to learn rather than spend hours in front of books. This approach proved advantageous, helping me navigate the demanding examination system in Hong Kong and successfully gain university admission to study Physics.
My curiosity led me to continue to pursue master’s and doctoral degrees in physics, as my undergraduate studies were not enough to satisfy my desire to delve deeper into these fields. During my postgraduate studies, I became deeply involved in educating young students at Hong Kong Baptist University, teaching electromagnetism, and guiding secondary school students to participate in challenging Asia and International Physics Olympiad competitions, where many achieved gold and silver awards.
After moving to the United Kingdom, I also worked with Pimlico Connections and The Access Project, providing free tutorials to financially disadvantaged students. These experiences allowed me to understand the differences in education and exams between Hong Kong and the UK, where Hong Kong exams are often more challenging. This understanding has enabled me to adapt my Asian STEM education methods to fit the UK curriculum, helping students bridge the gap and excel academically.
While my teaching approach is highly exam-oriented, my students often find my lessons well-structured and enjoyable. I focus on simplifying complex concepts and making learning engaging, which helps students build a strong foundational understanding. Many of my students have gone on to pursue Physics and Mathematics at the undergraduate level.
Ultimately, my goal is to inspire students to appreciate the wonders of science and achieve their academic goals, equipping them with the skills needed for future success.
The character 研, which appears in my company logo, embodies the essence of research and study, aligning perfectly with my tutorial philosophy. In both Chinese, 研 means "to study" or "to research," reflecting my commitment to fostering a deep understanding and curiosity in students. This character symbolizes the journey of exploration and learning that I strive to inspire in each of my students. I believe that my lessons are not one-directional but encourage active participation from both sides. The "research" aspect of 研 signifies that students are not merely recipients of knowledge but are active contributors to their learning process. I often present questions that go beyond textbooks, challenging my students to think critically and engage deeply with the material, making the learning experience collaborative and dynamic.
